Historical origin and technical layout
The international civil defence sign was codified in 1977. It consists of an equilateral blue triangle on an orange background; one triangle point must face upwards, and none of the triangle's points may touch the outer border of the background. The geometric layout is prescribed to ensure visibility and consistent recognition.
Legal context and operational scope
Under Article 66 of Protocol I, civil defence personnel, buildings, vehicles and equipment displaying the blue-and-orange sign must be respected and protected. Using the sign to shield military objectives is prohibited and may constitute perfidy or other violations of international humanitarian law.
