Magen David Adom (Red Star of David)

Systemic classification

Official nomenclature: Magen David Adom (Red Shield of David / National Society Emblem)

Legal anchor: Geneva Conventions — Additional Protocol III context and operational arrangements

Core function: National emblem for Israel’s emergency medical society; internationally protected when used within the Red Crystal framework.

Historical origin and neutrality

Magen David Adom (Red Shield of David) was founded in 1930. For many years its red Star/Shield emblem was not accepted internationally as a primary Geneva protective sign. The adoption of the Red Crystal in 2005 provided a mechanism for national societies like Magen David Adom to participate fully in the International Movement while maintaining a national emblem domestically.

Legal context and international deployment

Under the compromise enabled by Additional Protocol III, Israel's national society is recognised as a full member of the International Movement. The Red Shield of David may be used nationally; for international operations it is typically geometrically enclosed within the Red Crystal to receive full legal protection under the Geneva framework.
