Systemic classification
Official nomenclature: The Red Lion and Sun (Historic Protective Sign)
Legal anchor: Geneva Convention practice (recognised historically; formally suspended for active use since 1980)
Core function: Historical protective emblem of Iran; remains legally recognised in archival treaty records but is currently inactive.
Historical origin and neutrality
The Red Lion and Sun originated under the Qajar dynasty as Persia’s national protective emblem. It was recognised in early twentieth-century treaty practice alongside other protective signs. Following the 1979 revolution, Iran transitioned to the Red Crescent but reserved the right to re-adopt the Lion and Sun in the future.
Legal context and inactive status
Although not actively used, the Red Lion and Sun remains part of the historical treaty record. Unauthorized modern display may mislead regarding official protection and could raise legal or diplomatic issues. The emblem’s archival status makes it useful for academic study of state succession in humanitarian treaty law.
